GFYC has two Social Objectives. We want to increase the average ‘healthy life expectancy’ age of our community (63), to nearer the average ‘life expectancy’ age of our population (80) and we want to reduce social isolation & lonliness.
The British Medical Journal published two research papers in January 2023 which both shed new light on which middle age behaviours might improve our chances of enjoying good health later in life - social relationships & exercise. Good For You Club directly creates opportunities for both.
The first BMJ report highlighted the benefits of starting or maintaining high quality & diverse social relationships throughout middle to early old age. The less satisfying these relationships are in your 40s and 50s, the greater the risk of having several illnesses later in life. Such was the significance of the report findings, they suggest at country & global levels, social connections should be considered a public health priority in chronic disease prevention & intervention. And at a community level interventions focusing on social relationship satisfaction or quality may be particularly efficient in preventing the progression of chronic conditions. The second study found that maintaining an exercise routine throughout adulthood seems to be best for preserving mental acuity & memory & staving off conditions such as dementia. GFYC facilitates these middle age behaviours (there were 42,806 women in Perth & Kinross aged 45-64 in 2021) which should in turn have a long-term impact on local women & their need for access to future healthcare provision. In March 2023 there were 538,000 peolpe on NHS waiting lists in Scotland, some very much in pain & waiting years on surgery. GFYC is an opportunity to enhance the lives of women & their families now and relieve pressure on our health & social services in years to come. The growing divergence between the demands on, & the ability to fund & deliver, adequate healthcare for a growing aging population is unlikely to change.
